Synopsis:
A young boy is left Home Alone by accident by his family who have gone on holiday. He's left alone to defend himself and his home from a couple of high profile burglars.
Well… it’s that magical time of year once again and the
Christmas season is upon us. What better way to kick it off than with Home Alone!! Macaulay Culkin, the poster
boy and icon of all Christmas movies, leads this charming tale which has stayed
in the minds and hearts of all generations been and all generations to come. Am I
biased because Home Alone is a symbol
of my Christmas childhood? Of course!!! But then any child that has been deprived
of this film growing up should have their parents locked up…. FOREVER. Actually to be honest, even if Home Alone is
past your time it should still appeal to the parents who can sit and watch
their children light up at the sight of the onscreen shenanigans. In fact
anyone during this joyous holiday season who can’t sit and bake in the warm
glow of Home Alone is probably a monster… a vicious monster that hates
everything that’s good and just in the world… or a contrary prick. You choose.
The funny thing is this is actually one of the few films to
be outdone by its sequel and still remain an instantly recognisable classic.
Chris Columbus has shown us time and time again how great he is with child
actors and how to get the best out of them, Home
Alone being his crowning achievement. Although Culkin is young here, and
his inexperience shows through a little, he’s still the perfect lead as he
carries that obnoxious annoying younger sibling gimmick to perfection. Joe
Pesci and Harry Stern are also the undeniable hidden heroes of this film as lets be honest, they provide the bulk of the entertainment and have the best onscreen
chemistry. It’s also quite fun just to see Pesci in a PG role, was kind of
expecting “You muddafucka you!” to come out of his lips at any moment.
I think basically when it comes down to it we can relate to
this film, regardless of when you were born. We were all at one point in time
that kid who wanted their parents to go away because we haven’t gotten our way.
Chris Columbus points the mirror at us and we realise the importance of family
and togetherness and remember what it’s like to be a child again. Plus the
pranks are HILARIOUS!
Overview:
You know what time it is? It's Christmas time damnit! It’s
time to watch Home Alone, right now. A bona fide classic.
