Beautiful Lies (2010) - Pierre Salvadori

Synopsis:
A hairdresser forwards a love letter to her mother hoping to pull her out of depression.

In her previous outings Audrey Tautou has been nothing short of amazing. She captivated hearts and minds as Amelie and brought seriousness and wonder in her portrayal of Gabrielle “Coco” Bonheur Chanel . Safe to say this woman has the midas touch and her role in Beautiful Lies proves it. Tautou is an absolute gem! Her acting of course is brilliant but what sets her so far and above everyone else has to be her facial expressions. I don’t think anyone else can get across an emotion so perfectly. Sometimes it isn’t just about getting across the emotion but it’s about being interesting to look at. Tautou completely captivates you simply by the way she looks and combined with her ability to act she brightens up and brings to life every single scene that she’s in. Cant mess with genetics… she was born to do this and it shows.

That’s not to say she was the only great thing this movie had to offer. It also showcases the talents of Nathalie Baye and Sami Bouajila. Both are brilliant and there really is no better trinity to carry this project. Baye plays the lonely turned obsessive role brilliantly; although her character does feel slightly exaggerated. Bouajila is just fantastic. Maybe even the highlight of the film. His reactions to the madness that he’s gotten caught up in are quite frankly… hilarious; on par with that of the great Audrey Tautou.

It’s an absolute treat watching all the drama unfold as terrible things happen with the best intentions. It also feels so warm (as it should being set in the south of France) and inviting with its vibrant colours splashed all over the screen that it comes across as the most comfortable uncomfortable comedy you could ever sit through.

Overview:
Even if rom-coms aren’t normally your thing (and I would have to say that Beautiful Lies is much more than just that) I can’t think of any man, woman or child who wouldn’t enjoy this film. In fact I dare you... if you show me someone who doesn’t enjoy it, then I’ll show you a liar.
