Evil Dead (2013) - Fede Alvarez

Synopsis:
Five friends head out to secluded cabin in the woods to help one of the girls go cold turkey after years of drug abuse. Turns out that the cabin, since they last visited, had been the site of a vicious exorcism and the book that unleashed the demon initially falls into the hands into the most curious member of the group who reads from the book, unwittingly releasing the Evil that resides within it.

Although brimming with updated effects and added gore, the new Evil Dead doesn't bring the same fun that made the first two iterations of the franchise so appealing. This would be understandable if you wanted to up the horror elements, which it certainly does, but at the same time it doesn't feel gritty enough and comes across too staged to properly envelope the audience. The pace feels very rushed and again, the fun of facing multiple spooky antagonists (Trees, demons outside, demons inside, demons in the basement, possessed hands etc...) is lost as it tends to only focus on the main characters' possessions one at a time. At times it just takes itself too seriously when this should be an over the top gore fest which should terrify as well as entertain. In the end it's a stellar performance from Jane Levy and the character Eric's hilariously unbelievable ability to survive keeps Evil Dead more than passable.
