Anna Karenina (2012) - Joe Wright

Synopsis:
Set in Imperial Russia, the wife of a senior statesman enters into an affair with Count Vronski which leads to public shame and a grizzly end for the socialite.

Critics might have been correct when they labelled Joe Wright's Anna Karenina as being all "style over substance", or perhaps that would have been the case if "style" wasn't used simply for styles sake. Although the transitions between scenes and the incorporation of the stage are flawless it really is just a vehicle to fleet between one nauseatingly putrid yellow and claustrophobic scene to the next. It flits hopelessly between the stage and outside scenery, the metaphors holding opposite connotations and ultimately coming across as thoughtless. Most audiences would have switched off early on as this overly long bore-fest feels even longer than its obscene run time, the only saving grace a forgettable minute sub plot.
