Despicable Me (2010) - Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud

Synopsis:
Gru tries to get a loan from the bank so that he can steal the moon and become the ultimate villain. However, his three adopted daughters get in the way.

Despicable Me is a good family film, if not slightly shallow, that anyone can enjoy. It may seem harsh describing the film as shallow but unfortunately it came off kind of student-ish. Not in terms of production quality of course which is a joy to behold considering the cost efficient creation process adopted by Illumination Entertainment. Instead when it comes down to its pacing. Even the physics it adheres too seems a bit off. Due to Gru getting hit with missiles in the first act and surviving there really is no peril to be had and although that leaves us to appreciate the softer side of the story concerning his three adopted daughters it really doesn’t build tension well. It’s all about consistency and we’re not going to care much for the last sequence if no one is really in danger.

With that said his relationship with his ‘daughters’ as they begin to grow on him is nicely done and the saving grace of the film. There are also other joys to be had concerning some of the little yellow characters. These are the minions…. And they are awesome. If anything the entire film is worth watching purely to see how they act. You’ll never see anything quite like them. Firstly they are cute. Secondly, their interaction and linguistics set them apart from anything done previously. For a moment you think you can understand what they are saying but then you are reminded by your brain that they are talking COMPLETE gobbledygook. To be able to trick the mind like that is quite a feat of character creation as it certainly grabs your attention. You can’t understand what exactly they’re saying but you know what they mean through the pitch of their voices and the length of  their words, combined with how they act. They’re kinda of like intelligent yet stupid pets…. And there are millions of them….. I KNOW WHAT I MEAN EVEN IF YOU DON’T!

Overview:
This is all I really have to say about Despicable Me. It was alright I suppose, nothing special. Certainly not worth a sequel but hey, the first one made money… so why not right?
