The Cabin In the Woods (2012) - Drew Goddard

Synopsis:
When five friends go to a cabin in the woods for a weekend things take a bizarre twist after one of the group reads from the diary of young girl who was murdered by her overly-religiously family. Things then take a more bizarre twist when the friends realise their is something much worse out there than the zombies they've just unleashed.

Hey.... Hey Hollywood... look over here.... this is what you call ORIGINAL! You took your time but finally an original concept with big budget funding has landed. To be honest, although I new of it's reputation as a unique film, by the start of the film I was still worried the characters where going to be generic horror movie stereo types but eventually that becomes clear as an intentional part of the plot and I thought that was a really nice twist. Do I think the cast was strong enough to carry these roles? No, probably not. A couple of stand out performances but nothing to write home about. But again I don't think this film was trying to take itself too seriously.

I do find that a real shame and missed opportunity really. Mainly because it was a comedy. Maybe that's a mistake on my part to think this was going to be scary. Unfortunately, it wasn't at all. A couple standard yet predictable jumps, mixed with a decent amount of gore, but that was literally it. I've seen films be both funny and absolutely terrifying before though, Drag me to Hell and The Evil Dead are both great examples of this. Maybe Drew Goddard needs to sit down with Sam Raimi get some advice. I actually feel that the trailer gave it a very Evil Dead, probably the cabin, and that's why I had such high expectations for this film. Really should have put more effort into the scares, it would have given it a much more lasting impact for it's audience.

But where the terror may have come up short, the story was still this films saving grace. To be fair, given the abstract big-brother structure of the piece its difficult to truly scare the audience because we are always going to feel slightly detached from our heroes. So maybe it was best on their part to focus on the comedy more than the horror. Anyway, the ideas allowed the creators to really do something interesting here. I particularly enjoyed the last couple scenes as our heroes fight against those who put them in this predicament with a whole army of different terrors. I would have loved to be in the creative department for this film coming up with the different characters to put in. Despite it not really fitting in with the Horror and Comedy genre, feeling a bit more action orientated, it was still a visual treat. You'll find yourself fully engaged too as it's just so fun! Again, although I personally would have wanted more scares in this film, it really is very funny and if they wanted to go for comedy, they've nailed it.

This is kind of going to be spoiler now but I don't care because I'm sick of it. Sigourney Weaver needs to stop cameoing left, right and centre. I even turned to my girlfriend and was like “Oh my gosh, it's Sigourney Weaver” at the same time thinking to myself, “Actually, I'm kind of sick of seeing her in these random roles” anyway, rant over.

Overview:
It's great to see something so fun and unique hit the big screen but I feel they JUST missed the mark here, but keep going you film makers, you're heading in the right direction. Really in the mood for a new and terrifying film now though.
